tomorrow is friday!

today after class we went to the national theater to see a jazz performance. it was pretty neat. the building is super old, so the architecture was incredible! the jazz was a sort of costarican 'gringo' jazz called jazz garbo. it was pretty cool and the main singer lady was really good at scatting. i only took a few fotos today though... so here ya go.

half way through the second week!

today marked the middle of our second week here in costa rica! wow i can't believe we've already been here that long. and this friday we get to get out of class early to go to the beach for the weekend. nice. we're going to manuel antonio for three days. vamos a la playa eh eh eh eh eh!
today we went to the national museum. it was cool. since costa rica doesn't have a military anymore, they converted the old armory into a museum! there was a butterfly garden and lots of old, golden things from the tribes that were once here.
can you see us?
this reminded me of one of those gel-draw things where you can draw and erase as many times as you want... ha ha but ancient!
law number 7501?? wow!
this is moshi! from mulan!
so in our bathroom the other day, there was this giant spider. we named him herman. but jayne tried to kill him and he hid behind the sink. well, we hadn't seen him for a day or two and then una cucaracha appeared! we decided that herman scared melvin (la cucaracha) out from behind the sink. well i didn't want jayne to freak out cause she hadn't seen melvin yet, so i captured him underneath the plunger and told her not to pick it up ha ha so she didn't. we hadn't told amira any of this... so today was cleaning day and guess what? both herman and melvin are gone!! los pobrecitos.

el segundo dia de la segunda semana

today was not the best. i feel like everyone was kind of in a bad mood and it was rubbing off on me. today was just kind of blah. we got through class and then got a delicious lunch... it was a bunch of fruit with yogurt, granola and... dun dun dun... ice cream! so yummy! so that was great! then we went back to the school to work on our homework because we have to do a big project for thursday... that we hadn't started yet. but then we remembered that they were showing a movie at school. some cultural movie. so we decided to watch it. bad decision. it wasn't the best movie ever and it left us in a really somber mood. sadness. so we decided to walk home, because we figured walking would help boost our moods! and it did! we got home and we were a lot happier. then we had delicious pasta and meat for dinner. amira is an amazing cook. but now it's raining so hard and there is so much lightening that we may or may not die. but really. amira is freaking out ha ha she wouldn't let us shower because she said it was very dangerous. so we waited around for a while til she said there wasn't much lightening so go fast. and we did! the water was freezing and the lightening started up again when it was my turn so i was fast! woo... i think a car in front of our house just got struck by lightening. we saw and heard it at the same time and now there are a bunch of car alarms going off. ha ha amira is hiding in her room. she made us unplug everything and turn off the lights. this is a pretty intense storm though!

the first excursion

today was fun. we had to wake up super early... in the fives emma, in the fives. anyways, we took a taxi to a church/park and then waited for our bus which was a super cute reddish, retro bus. we went to a coffee plantation, a cool volcano (one of the five active volcanoes in costa rica), then to the jungle where we saw a few waterfalls, snakes, monkeys... and sloths!
waiting for our bus
our tour guide. his name was Melvin
el volcan poaz
this little guy was resting against the glass wall, so i really did get that close to him! he was so cute! he kept opening his one eye to see but the other one was smooshed against the glass.. que lindo!
SLOTHS!
clockwise... me, brittany, myken, mikela, jayne, stephen. this was in la jungla!

el primero sábado

hoy fue el primero sábado aquí! so to celebrate... fuimos al mercado! actually, we went to two different markets and walked all over San Jose and actually ended up walking all the way home too ha ha it was kind of a long day of walking and we were pretty tired so we came home early... and just in time too! about 15 minutes after we got home it started raining again. it rains A LOT here! every day around 1 or 2 in the afternoon it starts up and doesn't stop until around 5 or 6, not just sprinkling either... it dumps! but today was a little different. it was just kind of wet pretty much all day. sprinkling or misting, but once we got home it dumped!
ew... there were pigeons everywhere and there were guys selling corn that you could feed them and get pictures taken with a bunch of them on you... nasty.
the grand hotel of costa rica
jayne loved these windows
i love the graffiti
i thought this was slightly creepy, but pretty neat too that someone stood next to this tree long enough to paint this!
jayne loved her burrito
if you look closely you'll see two socks. they look like there are feet in them. i thought it was a body, but with closer inspection we discovered that someone had just stuffed some sticks and stuff in them and then stuck them into the ground so they look like legs. creepy.
for rachel. los payasos
jayne loves this color. and we see it all over!
