super long day...

wow. so yesterday may have been the longest day of my life. but it was also super great! lets see... what did we do. we woke up, got ready, ate breakfast, got on the bus (which has been super crowded the last few days because the other bus disappeared...we've been trying to figure out what happened and we decided that the driver must just be sick so he called all the people who take his bus and told them to ride with don Luis instead ha ha), got to school and were only a few minutes late to class, then for lunch we went to am/pm (a convenient store that is awesome) and got the coolest yogurt ever with a banana then we used our jar of peanut butter that we're trying to eat from my birthday.
after lunch we went to el museo de oro in downtown san jose with our favorite tour guide dennis. i really need to get a pic of dennis... or even better... a video of him laughing! his laugh is priceless. anyways... geez i get side-tracked easy don't i? um... the museum. it was okay. i was really expecting more out of it and wasn't too impressed. so after the museum we decided to venture off the the Temple! we had been planning on going for the past two weeks and it just hasn't worked out so we all wore our dresses and decided that it must happen. and so off we went. and it's a good thing we left when we did (around 2:00) because baptisms were at 7 and we had no idea how long it would take us to get there. so after two buses and a taxi we made it. and oh it was great. we ended up getting there with a ward so they let us join them. we also met a family there from milcreek utah... small world eh?
so after our super long journey to Heredia (the part of san jose that the temple is in. i don't really understand san jose... cause there are a million different areas of san jose. guadalupe, montelimar, san pedro, carimol... i just don't know), it was time to head home... cause it was 9:00. dark. sketchy. but we were super happy after our temple visit so we weren't even that worried about getting back, even though we still had a good hour or so of homework to do. so we decided to take a taxi and not try out the buses that late. the kind security guard at the temple called us a few and we all piled in (there were 6 of us). our driver thought we were hilarious. and by we i mean brittany. she was dancing and saying 'hablo spanglish, yo hablo spanglish' yea... we were tired.
we got home around 10... ish. ate some dinner from our lovely dinner trays, showered fast and worked on our homework. we both had to get our oral presentations ready for today. bad idea to leave that to the last minute cause we both had to talk for ten minutes. solo en espanol. but we couldn't keep our eyes open. so we fell asleep around 11:00 but set the alarm for 5:30 AM (like how i put the am there... yea emma, we woke up in the 5ives) so we could finish up. and its a good thing we did cause we would not have woken up.
so this morning was a bit rough. cramming in as much homework as possible and getting ready at the same time. but we did it and the presentations weren't even that terrible. kinda funny actually. then after class we had a rough time with our order for lunch, or actually the people had a rough time with our order and we were just too tired and frustrated to complain. so we ate this food that we didn't even order. lame. oh well it was pretty decent. then we went back to the school and i did have of my oral presentation for next thursday... no more procrastinating for me. we decided we should walk home to vent a little (we were having a rough day... probably from lack of sleep and stress from the presentations). we wanted to go to this perimercado by our house to see if it was amazing or not. and it was. probably our new favorite store. and the funny thing is that its just like any normal grocery store. not sure why we liked it so much, but we spent an hour in there just walking up and down all the isles. fun. entonces, we headed down the street a la casa to pack for our excursion tomorrow. that's going to be an adventure.

funny day

oh gosh... not sure what jayne and i are on lately but we have been having some pretty hilarious experiences. today started out normal enough, wake up at 6:30, get ready, eat fruit (our mama tica did ask if we wanted cake for breakfast though ha NOT!), take the bus to school, class. my watch is kind of temperamental though and it really was acting crazy today. i set it to the right time before we left the house and it slowly got behind, so i felt like we were in class forever... but then we got out early and it was wonderful. even though it wasn't really early, my watch just told me it was. but what can you expect for a $4 watch right?
we went and got lunch by the university again, this time we got a gringa... so good! just like in mexico. then we decided to walk to this supposedly amazing park in san jose. my teacher kept telling us how cool it was and stuff. he did say that we needed to take a bus because it was very far away, but we were bored and had nothing to do so we just decided to walk. and walk. and walk. but we made it. it wasn't the coolest park ever, but it did have grass and a pond so that was a bonus.
on the way back home things got a little weird. we stopped at an am/pm (the best convenient store in town) to get the yogurt that brittany had been raving about. it was pretty delicious. strawberry yogurt with these little crunchy, chocolate balls inside. yum. so we were eating those and walking back. we ran into some strange people. on this one corner while we were waiting to walk. this man in a red shirt with greased back hair came and stood in front of me, much too close for comfort, and just stared at my face. can you say uber creep? then as we crossed heading east he crossed south and then kept walking with us but on the other side of the street and stared at us for a few blocks. heebie geebies.
then there were people everywhere. super weird for a tuesday afternoon. we had a few people semi-stalk us and random strangers just ram into us while walking like we weren't even there. i had a blind guy hit me with his walking stick.
then here's the funny part. the sidewalk here is super dangerous for someone like me. i trip and fall on a normal, flat, uncracked road. but wow... this is a danger zone. random holes and dibbets all over the place. and not just little holes. these are huecotes! anyhow. you can imagine the curbs... very irregular in height and distance from the sidewalk to the road. i have to constantly be watching my step, cause you can ask jayne, i've had my share of close calls with falling and i've scuffed up every pair of shoes i brought here. well today i didn't look down. enough said. i was flat on my stomach in the middle of the street. got a few bruises on my knee, scuffed up my ankle and had some pretty dirty hands. the police across the street didn't know what to do. they just looked at me. the people just walked around me. my water bottle went flying and i lost my cap. hilarious.
these trees are awesome. not sure what kind they are, but they look like tie-dye or like someone threw some paint on them or something.

mi cumpleanos

today was my birthday... and now i'm 21! ah that's crazy. well today was pretty uneventful. woke up at 6:30 like usually, got ready, ate some fruit and went to school. we switched classrooms since we're half way done and that was kinda fun. my class is in the basement of the school now which is in the jungle... sweet.
after class jayne, mikela, brittany and emily went to a delicious place for lunch and got panninis and smoothies. then we walked to walmart to buy some oreos and peanut butter! yum! jayne and i walked back to the school cause we were bored. ate the yumminess. so good.
we decided, since it was only three, that we should just walk home too to waste some more time. so we did. but we decided to walk a different route then we usually do, just to see if we could do it. wow. bad idea. it took double as long so our feet hurt by the time we got home. we also sort of got lost for a minute which was a bit sketchy. but no worries. we found our way back and the people are so great and willing to help, especially when we look lost.
we made it back home just fine and were able to work on our homework. mucha tarea... pero esta bien! at about 6:00 our mama tica came in the room with a little chocolate cake singing happy birthday! ha ha she's the best. so since we're going to be off in some jungle on jayne's birthday, she decided to combine our birthday's tonight = lots of cake. for dinner we had spaghetti, tomatoes and beans (of course), then for she brought out the cakes! in the chocolate cake she put two candles, one for each of us, and we each got to make three wishes. lucky. so we each got a slice of chocolate cake. then out came the tres leches. so good... so much cake. then out came the jello. oh gosh. we couldn't handle it. we've been here for two weeks and have never had dessert after dinner, then in one night we get three. it was just too much. ha ha we busted up laughing and couldn't stop. amira was confused and tried asking what was so funny. but the problem was that it wasn't really that funny. we just couldn't control ourselves and literally laughed for a good fifteen minutes. jayne said she felt like trevor that one time. 'i can feel the food in my throat... it's going to come out soon.' that put me over the edge. i started crying i was laughing so hard. and after eating so much cake and stuff too, it's a wonder that neither of us threw up. ha ha we didn't end up eating the jello though cause we just couldn't, but esta bien, amira left it in the fridge for us to eat later. joy.
so today was a pretty great day.

so much to tell...

well we had a great weekend here in costa rica! on friday, we got to get out of class two hours early to go to the beach! how cool is that?? so we took our weekly exam and left. we all piled in taxis and drove to the bus station. we got there a little early... but there was also an earlier bus that just happen to have sixteen extra seats for all of us to leave early. sweet. so we drove all the way to manuel antonio... about three-ish hours. then we got to our hostel... a lovely piuta camp style housing... where we changed into our suits and headed to the beach. we hung out there for a few hours, then came back, showered and went out to dinner. then we came back, watched a movie... since our awesome hostel projected a movie every night onto this giant white wall... and went back to the beach to watch the lightening storm and chill by the bon-fire. it was a good friday.
then saturday we had the WHOLE day to do whatever we wanted. so we woke up, went for a run on the beach, ate a big breakfast (that's really what the sign said 'big breakfast here'), then we went back and changed into our suits and headed into the national park with the hopes of seeing a sloth! (or at least that was my hope :)) and we did! we saw three sloths just hanging out in a tree in there natural habitat... not in the zoo and it was awesome! we saw a bunch of monkeys too... not in cages. so cool. there were also iguanas all over the place and we saw a few crazy colored frogs. we spent the day hiking through the jungle and hanging out on an awesome beach taking in the sun and riding the waves. after a loooong day we came back, showered, went to dinner, came back and played some ninja attack and watched another movie. journey to some crazy island or something. this time though it started raining so we got a little wet and by the time the movie was over we were all so wiped out that we just went to bed.
and sunday. that was a long day. we woke up and walked on the beach. ate breakfast. changed. went back to the beach for some sun and waves. went back to the hostel. showered and got dry (somewhat). tried to get on the 11:30 bus. fail. went to the gas station and got a gatorade. tried to get on the 12:00 bus. fail. went back to the hostel. watched diego eat lunch. went back to the grocery store. got an ice cream sandwich and a coke. watched spain score against italy. went back to the hostel. colored. went to the bus stop. tried to get on the 2:30. fail. watched a sad, little, three-legged dog. went to a restaurant for lunch. got some delicious nachos. ate super slow. tried to get on the 4:30 bus. fail. waited on the corner while spain won the game. got on the 5:00 bus. win. had to take a major detour because of the huecote en the rode. four and a half hours later we arrived at the bus station in san jose. walked outside looking for a taxi. nice man said follow me. get into a red pick-up (not a taxi...) dance to some hilarious music. get a little worried when we don't recognize anything. finally we see the perimercado. we made it. shower quick. sleep.

tomorrow is friday!

today after class we went to the national theater to see a jazz performance. it was pretty neat. the building is super old, so the architecture was incredible! the jazz was a sort of costarican 'gringo' jazz called jazz garbo. it was pretty cool and the main singer lady was really good at scatting. i only took a few fotos today though... so here ya go.

half way through the second week!

today marked the middle of our second week here in costa rica! wow i can't believe we've already been here that long. and this friday we get to get out of class early to go to the beach for the weekend. nice. we're going to manuel antonio for three days. vamos a la playa eh eh eh eh eh!
today we went to the national museum. it was cool. since costa rica doesn't have a military anymore, they converted the old armory into a museum! there was a butterfly garden and lots of old, golden things from the tribes that were once here.
can you see us?
this reminded me of one of those gel-draw things where you can draw and erase as many times as you want... ha ha but ancient!
law number 7501?? wow!
this is moshi! from mulan!
so in our bathroom the other day, there was this giant spider. we named him herman. but jayne tried to kill him and he hid behind the sink. well, we hadn't seen him for a day or two and then una cucaracha appeared! we decided that herman scared melvin (la cucaracha) out from behind the sink. well i didn't want jayne to freak out cause she hadn't seen melvin yet, so i captured him underneath the plunger and told her not to pick it up ha ha so she didn't. we hadn't told amira any of this... so today was cleaning day and guess what? both herman and melvin are gone!! los pobrecitos.
